The Pirates and Brewers played an amazing game in garish uniforms

Saturday’s Say Hey, Baseball is a big fan of all of the Players’ Weekend uniforms — except for the ones in Milwaukee

As an avid fan of both baseball as a sport and sports uniforms in general, Friday’s game between the Brewers and Pirates was an intriguing one. It caught my eye in particular because both teams were wearing some truly garish uniforms. While most of the jerseys and hats for Players’ Weekend are fun and vibrant to look at, this particular matchup was a rough sight on the eyes. Both Milwaukee and Pittsburgh were wearing a similarly garish shade of yellow and that same ugly shade of yellow dominated the uniforms for both teams.

While the Brewers came out on the better side of things since they had that dark shade of blue to offset the ugly yellow and they also had the classic ball-in-glove logo going for them, the same could not be said for the Pirates. Even Chris Archer had to admit that Pittsburgh’s look for this weekend was “a bit questionable.”

With that being said, sometimes the most beautiful things come in ugly packages and that is the best way to describe the game that the Pirates and Brewers played on Friday night. While the uniforms were ugly, the game itself was probably the most exciting contest that we’ll get all weekend. The NL Central rivals scratched and clawed at each other for 15 innings and it was the final inning that delivered the most drama of the night.

A 4-4 tie after nine innings was finally broken by Francisco Cervelli in the top of the 15th inning, which is when the veteran Pirates catcher blooped one into right field. It fell in exactly the right place to score runners from first and second base and give the Buccos a two-run lead in the top of the 15th. That’s normally when we see teams wave the white flag, but the Brewers had other ideas.

Instead of rolling over, Milwaukee mounted a bases-loaded rally with two out in the bottom of the 15th. Eventually, Erik Kratz snuck one past Pittsburgh’s infield defense to tie the game and then Orlando Arcia pushed one into right field to win it for Milwaukee. The win kept the Brewers in a Wild Card spot and most importantly, they proved that beautiful games can be played in ugly uniforms.

• The City of Fountains lived up to its moniker on Friday night, as the Royals and Indians saw their game get delayed because the outfield fountains started leaking and forced a delay at Kauffman Stadium.
• If you stayed at the ballpark, it was worth the wait because the Royals ended up hitting back-to-back home runs in order to walk-off against Cleveland.
• Khris Davis has powered his way to the top of the 2018 home run leaderboards. Athletics Nation tried to analyze just how he’s been doing it this season.

• If you’re wondering why the Braves didn’t dip into their vast pool of prospects to trade for a big name at the trade deadline, it’s probably because they’re planning to use a good number of them as September call-ups.
• While the Giants fans seem to be resigned to their fate as a .500 ballclub this season, it’s clear that if they are going to rebuild, it’s going to be done in The Giants Way.
• Hanser Alberto is going to be playing for the Rangers now, but it’s coming at the expense of Bartolo Colon going on the DL. Is this finally the last that we’ll see of Big Sexy?
• Matt Adams is back with the Cardinals, and the crew at Viva El Birdos is already trying to figure out how to fix him.
• The Yankees will likely be one of the teams playing baseball in October and the hitting of Miguel Andujar is one of the many reasons why that’s a possibility for them.
