Cavs attend Treveon Graham’s workout, interested in signing him

The 6’5” wing played for the Hornets last season.

According the nba.com’s David Aldridge, the Cavaliers sent a contingent that included GM Koby Altman and assistant GM Mike Gansey to free agent wing Treveon Grahams’s workout in Las Vegas this morning. The Cavs, along with the Timberwolves, are interested in Graham:

Graham, a 6’5”, 25-year-old, wing played last season with in Charlotte, but became an unrestricted free agent when the Hornets declined to give him a qualifying offer at the end of the season. In 63 games with the Hornets last year, Graham averaged 4.3 points while shooting 43.4 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from three in 16.7 minutes per game. He played in college at Virginia Commonwealth and also spent time with the Idaho Stampede in the G-League in 2015-16 after going undrafted in the 2015 NBA Draft.

The allure of Graham for the Cavs is that he is a buy-low, low-risk three-and-d wing who still has room to grow as a player. He showed some development last year in Charlotte that indicates an interesting NBA future.

Cleveland also has room for him on the roster. Not counting restricted free agent Rodney Hood, the Cavs have 12 players signed and that could become 11 if they decline to guarantee Okaro White’s contract later this summer and 10 if Hood signs an offer sheet the Cavs deem too rich for their liking.

Even if the Cavs bring both players back, there is a need for a player like Graham with upside and a skill set that fits the modern NBA. Salary wise, Cleveland still has both its mid-level exception and bi-annual exception to use. This could allow them to outbid the Timberwolves, who are hard capped, for Graham.
