National title hero Tagovailoa is throwing again after thumb injury

Good news for the Tide.

Alabama fans got a dose of good offseason news on Sunday, as Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is throwing again, two months after suffering a thumb injury. Tagovailoa missed a chunk of spring ball this season after sustaining the injury on the very first day of spring ball during practice:

Saban said Tagovailoa would be further evaluated by doctors in Birmingham and likely will be out for a few days.

“Probably going to require some time for him to get back,” Saban said. “I’m not going to speculate on what the injury might be.”

Tagovailoa, as you remember, replaced Jalen Hurts in the second half of the national championship against Georgia, which resulted in a 23-20 Tide victory in overtime. He did return for some practices after the initial injury, but had another setback shortly before the Tide’s A Day on April 21st, which kept him off the field for the scrimmage.

The good news is that Alabama still has Hurts on the roster — the rising junior went 26-2 as a Bama starter, with the Tide’s win in January. It’s obvious to speculate Hurts may have considered transferring. In fact, Tagovailoa admitted earlier this month that had he not played in the title game, he was set on transferring to USC, before later saying his comments were taken out of context.

The depth chart is still a bit unclear even after spring ball, but for now, both guys are in Tuscaloosa.
