Nick Gilbert is making his triumphant return to the NBA Draft Lottery, and it’s wonderful

Dan Gilbert’s son has been through so much and now he’s back.

Nick Gilbert is the Cavaliers’ good luck charm, and on lottery night his appearance will have extra meaning.

Nick was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis as a child, a disorder of the nervous system which causes the spontaneous growth of tumors. Nick has had multiple surgeries during his life, as well as numerous rounds of chemotherapy. In February it was announced that the 21-year-old would be undergo brain surgery due to his neurofibromatosis, prompting the Cavaliers to contact him and wish him the best.

The son of Cavs owner Dan Gilbert has been a regular since 2011, when he made his first appearance on the stage and immediately got attention inside and outside basketball for the 14-year-old’s attitude at the draft lottery when he famously said “What’s not to like?” in response to being asked what he thought about his father’s praise of him. The Cavaliers went on to win the No. 1 overall pick and selected Kyrie Irving.

Nick appeared at the 2014 draft lottery, and once again the Cavaliers managed to land the No. 1 pick, despite having just a 15.6 percent chance of moving up. The fruit of that draft was much less successful, however, with the Cavs drafting Anthony Bennett — but Nick’s legacy as a good luck charm was cemented.

Seeing Nick back at the lottery, considering everything he’s been through, will be a wonderful return and one of the stories of the night. If him returning to represent the Cavaliers gain leads to Luka Donic landing in Cleveland then, well, Nick’s legend as a good luck charm will live on forever.
