Potential Player for our 1st Round Draft Pick: Jerome Robinson
Who is Jerome Robinson?
Jerome Robinson is a 6'6" versatile scoring wing with a good jumper and nice playmaking ability. He is 21 years old and a junior.
Where's he from?
Robinson is from Raleigh, North Carolina and plays his college ball at Boston College.
What makes him worth a first round pick?
Robinson has emerged as an elite offensive player this year and is killing it in one of the toughest conferences in the NCAA (up to 5 teams from the ACC were in the AP top 25 this year). He's second in the ACC in scoring at 20.6 ppg, leads the conference in offensive win shares (3.4), and is in the top 10 in FG%, eFG%, FT%, TS%, OBPM, and PER. He's a great shooter and is 7th in the conference in threes made with 64 while shooting a blistering 44%. He's also more than a shooter. He can and does get to the free throw line with regularity (7th in free throw attempts) and converts once he gets there (4th in free throws made and 6th in FT%).
And in conference play, Robinson's stepped his game up even further. He's averaged 24 ppg, leading the ACC, with a 55 FG%, 46 3P%, and 86 FT% for a ridiculous 64.3 eFG% and 67.7 TS%. In short, he's scoring a lot of points efficiently against some top tier competition. Walking bucket. 46 points vs. Notre Dame on 65 FG%, 32 against Virginia Tech on 50 FG%, 29 against #1 ranked Virginia on 54 FG%, 29 against Miami on 66 FG%, 28 against Clemson on 61 FG%, 24 against Duke on 72 FG%, etc.
Robinson's also a good passer for a wing, averaging at least 3 assists all three years and a 21.3 AST% his first two seasons (he's at 19 AST% this year) and one of the few non-PG players with more assists than turnovers. Led BC in assists last season and served as their primary playmaker. At 6'6", he's got the ability to see over the defense and make passes some shorter players have difficulty making. Has enough playmaking ability to masquerade as a point guard similar to Brandon Ingram for us. Could serve as a viable combo guard.
Robinson is a tough shot maker and not really bothered by shot contests. Can rise up over defenders and drain shots on the move and on the catch. Can quickly get himself into shooting position on and off the ball. Has a good handle and uses dribble combos as well as the triple threat to get to his spots. Can score from pretty much everywhere on the floor. Good athlete and play above the rim. Good body control near the rim. Has a thin frame (180 pounds) but isn't afraid of contact and can handle contact while driving. Has a floater and short jumper for when he can't get all the way to the rim and uses them well. Good cutter and can play off the ball as well.
Robinson has a nice mix of athleticism and skill. Polished offensive player and has the complete package. Dangerous when he gets hot (has a 40 point game on the year) and has 7 games this year with at least 4 made threes. He can fit on our team as a 6th man scorer, could function as a playmaker in lineups lacking a traditional point guard, and can fit with the starters as a shooter and cutter. Versatile offensive player.
Final notes:
While Robinson's had a breakout year this season, this is the first season where he's scored with any sort of efficiency. He's thin at 180 pounds and could get pushed around defensively by bigger and stronger wings. Took steps back defensively, recording career low in steals as well as a negative DBPM this year.
All that said, he's a very intriguing prospect and put up big numbers against quite a few good teams this year. He's so skilled on the offensive end that he should be considered for our first round pick.
