Sergio Aguero gets in altercation with fan after third-tier Wigan topple Manchester City in FA Cup

0

The Latics ended City’s dream of a quadruple this season.

Sergio Aguero shoved a pitch-invading fan moments after Manchester City’s dreams of a quadruple were dashed, and as he did so, the Soccer Gods looked down and said, Yes, there it is: The magic of the FA Cup.

The incident happened after Wigan Athletic, they of League One — the third tier of English soccer — knocked off Premier League giants City in the FA Cup on Monday evening, winning 1-0.

City played the entire second half down a man, after Fabian Delph was sent off in added time of the first half for a nasty studs-up tackle on Wigan’s Max Power. Referee Anthony Taylor initially pulled out a yellow card after the tackle, but then switched to a red, which led to an eruption from City manager Pep Guardiola, who despite lots of protestations this year about protecting the safety of the players seemed pretty aggrieved with what he saw as a harsh punishment for Delph. Funny how that all works.

The goal, a lovely one, came from the Latics’ Will Brigg against the run of play — he scored in a second half which, at one point, saw 10-man City holding 80% of the possession. But Wigan defended admirably, parking the bus with aplomb against a City side that has stormed to the top of the Premier League table this season and had very real dreams of the quadruple.

It was, bizarrely enough, City’s third consecutive FA Cup defeat to Wigan. The last time they lost to the Latics in the competition was five years ago.

After the match, Wigan supporters stormed onto the pitch in jubilation. Their presence led to the altercation with Aguero, and what will surely be a few days of people debating if fans should be allowed on the pitch or not after great games. (The conversation in soccer is just as boring as the one in college basketball, I assure you.)

Look at how happy the fans were:

Dan Burn will never get that many hugs again as long as he lives. Just a smorgasbord of hug.
