Potential Player for our 1st Round Draft Pick: Chandler Hutchison
Who's that? Where's he from? What makes him worth our first round pick? Is he any good?
(Be honest, they're probably the first thoughts you had when you looked at this title.)
Who is Chandler Hutchison?
Hutchison is a 6'7" wing with a 7'1" wingspan and a pretty versatile game. He's 22 years old and a senior.
Where's he from?
Hutchison is from Mission Viejo, CA and plays college ball for Boise State (it's in the Mountain west Conference, the same conference Nance Jr. played.)
What makes him worth a first round pick?
What makes Hutchison worth a first round look boils down to a couple of things: his versatility (particularly on the offensive end) and his length.
He's a very skilled offensive player (20 ppg and 3.5 apg), efficient despite a huge offensive work load (57.3 TS% on 33.9 USG%; 12th highest usage rate in NCAA), a very good rebounder for a wing (7.7 rpg), and has the 3rd highest defensive win shares (1.8) and DBPM (4.3) of any player with at least a 30 USG%.
He's a slasher (7.1 FTA; comparable to lottery pick Colin Sexton) who's gotten more comfortable with the 3 point shot (increased his 3PA) and projects to be a capable NBA shooter. He's capable of creating his own shot and doesn't need to be a great 3 point shooter to be effective. He's also capable of serving as a secondary playmaker, with a 24 AST%.
His skill set manifests itself on the box score. This season, he's had a 44 point game, a game with 18(!) rebounds, and a triple-double (23 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists). He's also been pretty consistent (has 10 double-doubles).
At 6'7" with a 7'1" wingspan, Hutchison has the size to guard NBA wings and disrupt passing lanes and enough skill to play as a big 2 guard.
He's one of those jack-of-all-trades type of player.
Final Notes:
Hutchison isn't a perfect player. He turns the ball over a lot (3.4 tpg) and is only shooting 33% from 3 and 73% from the line. But he can do so many things that we should keep an eye out for him IMO. He's probably not going to be a star player (I think his ceiling is Evan Turner with a 3 pointer), but he'll be good enough to contribute from day one.
