Pegasus World Cup 2018 results: Favorite Gun Runner takes home $7 million for winning

0

Two days after being named Horse of the Year, Gun Runner went out with a bang on Saturday cruised to a win in the second Pegasus World Cup in Hallandale, Fla.

Gun Runner easily outpaced West Coast and Gunnevera for the win, beating out two horses he also beat when winning the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic in November. The horse, rode by Florent Geroux in Saturday’s win, on Thursday won the American Horse of the Year honors at the Eclipse Awards.

The Pegasus World Cup victory netted $7 million for Gun Runner’s owners, in the 5-year-old’s final race.

Gun Runner had designs on running in the inaugural Pegasus World Cup in 2017 but was denied entry after sharing stables with two other horses with a highly contagious virus.

“I think that we all can feel a little loss over the lack of an opportunity to running in it last year,” trainer Steve Asmussen told the Associated Press on Friday. “And hopefully this puts us in a position to correct that.”

West Coast captured $1.6 million for finishing in second place, with Gunnevera picking up $1.3 million for third place. The total purse for the race was over $16.3 million.
