[Women's Basketball] Hornets Drop Third Straight Conference Game

WALNUT RIDGE, AR- After getting within eight of the number one ranked team in the country, the Hornets looked to redeem themselves against the Eagles of Williams Baptist College. But, the Eagles offense was too much for HSSU to catch up with and they went on to win 67-61.

Amani Ferguson (SO/Indianapolis, IN) and Alantis Sutton (SR/St. Louis, MO) lead the charge for Harris-Stowe with 15 points apiece. Jay'La Davis (JR/St. Louis, MO) was dishing out the shots today with five assists and picking up three steals while Tarsheia Page (FR/Chicago, IL) brought down a team high seven rebounds.

Ashlyn Ellis was the game leading scorer with 17 points while going 7-9 from the free-throw line. Blessing Samuel was right behind Ellis with 15 points for herself while Kate Junkersfield brought down a game high 11 rebounds.

Williams Baptist jumped out to a quick 11-3 lead after Samuel scored on an assist from Tia Brazell.

Harris-Stowe answered with back-to-back baskets from Sutton and Dynesha Powell (SR/East St. Louis, IL) to cut the Eagles lead to three with 5:14 left in the first quarter.

After WBC extended their lead back out to nine, Sutton ended the quarter with a fast-break lay-up to cut the Hornet's deficit to 19-13.

In the second quarter, both teams struggled to make a stop defensively. Harris-Stowe finally found their groove and scored on three consecutive plays to cut Williams Baptist lead to 32-29.

After a foul on Sutton gave Katelyn Ferguson two made free-throws, Kambri Davison (FR/Tulsa, OK) ended the half with a deep three-pointer to send the Hornets into the half down by one.

Harris-Stowe fought with the Eagles in the third quarter; always within reaching distance of them. The Hornets took their first lead of the game seven minutes into the quarter when Alantis Sutton grabbed an offensive rebound and sank the put-back to give HSSU a 46-45 lead.

Williams Baptist didn't let it get too far as they ended the third stanza with a free-throw from Nancy Irabor to tie the game at 53-53.

It was all Williams Baptist in the final 10 minutes. While Harris-Stowe matched their four made field goals, WBC went on to sink 6-9 from the charity stripe to cap off their lead in the final minute of the game.

With the loss, Harris-Stowe moves to 9-11 overall and 7-7 in AMC play. They will continue conference play on Thursday when they host the Eutectics of Saint Louis College of Pharmacy. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
