Another disappointing Chiefs playoff loss might open the door for Patrick Mahomes
The Chiefs are making a lot of moves this offseason. One could change their rookie QB from a bench warmer to the starter in 2018.
The Kansas City Chiefs made some big moves in the 2017 draft to go get Patrick Mahomes at the 10th overall pick. As soon as he was drafted, everyone wondered what that meant for Alex Smith’s future. Mahomes spent most of his rookie season on the bench, however. He started once in a throwaway game Week 17 against the Denver Broncos, completing 22 passes for 284 yards and an interception, and rushing seven times for 10 yards in the Chiefs win.
Looking ahead to 2018
The future is a mystery for Mahomes right now. There are a lot of things happening throughout the Chiefs organization and there are even more rumors of changes possibly coming. We know the Chiefs will have a new offensive coordinator next season. Matt Nagy just left to coach the Chicago Bears and Brad Childress is expected to retire after 19 seasons, according to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero. Head coach Andy Reid is also on the hot seat for failing to get a playoff win yet another season. His job seems to be safe for 2018 for now.
The biggest question mark for Mahomes is current starter Smith’s future, which is still up in the air. If Smith is traded, as is expected, the Mahomes era will begin next season. Mahomes and Smith are likely to be in a quarterback competition this offseason if Smith remains in Kansas City in 2018.
Fantasy Slant
Mahomes does not have much fantasy appeal right now. That can change very quickly if Smith leaves the Chiefs in the offseason. Mahomes played pretty well in his only start this season. He will have a great arsenal that includes Pro Bowlers Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, and Kareem Hunt a fellow rookie to help him make the transition. Mahomes could be a steal a ninth or 10th round if Smith is released or traded.
