What should I know about the two teams in the Boca Raton Bowl?
FAU (10-3, 8-0 in Conference USA)
Lane Kiffin built a fun team this year in Boca Raton. The result has been one of the best seasons – maybe the best season – in program history. The Owls will bowl for the first time since 2008 under ex-Miami coach Howard Schnellenberger, and the third time ever.
The Owls’ offense is an absolute blast with talented playmakers all over the field. That’s the biggest reason they morphed into a good team this year. And with a bunch of talented transfers set to become eligible next year, 2018 looks like it’ll be a good season, too.

Akron (7-6, 6-2 in MAC)
The Zips are bowling for the second time in three years but just the third time in 32 FBS (or Division I-A) seasons. Long-ago Auburn coach Terry Bowden has gotten the program to two of its best seasons ever, with the Zips’ eight wins in 2015 still standing as the most in their history. They’ve still never appeared in the AP Poll or generated any national hype, but they’ve started to find a groove as a dependable mid-major. This year’s team has a lousy offense but one of the Group of 5’s stouter defenses, which it’s ridden into bowl season.
