Cal men bounce back from tough opener; get Jones’ first win

0

What a turnaround.

After looking completely lackluster in its opener, the Cal men’s basketball team responded with an 85-82 victory Cal Poly, a game that never really felt that close in new head coach Wyking Jones’ first victory Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.

About as close as it got until the meaningless closing seconds with was Cal nursing a five-point lead that had been trimmed from 19. At that point, Marcus Lee followed up a missed layup by Darius McNeill with an emphatic putback dunk to give the Bears a 78-71 lead with 1 ½ minutes left.

It was the defining play of a career day by Lee, a 6-foot-11 forward who sat out last season after transferring from Kentucky.
