Florida missed a game-tying extra point, then lost by 1
Eddy Pineiro’s got quite the leg, but here’s why he missed that extra point.
Snap, hold, and kick. That’s the simplified version of extra-point strategy. Theoretically, it isn’t supposed to be that hard, but you never know what will happen with that oblong ball.
The main thing at play here: Florida was in a position to tie the game at the time. The miss left them down one point, 17-16, in the fourth quarter, and the final ended up just that.
I’ve really never seen this. Typically, a holder spins the ball to get the laces away from the kicker’s foot, which can influence the ball to go in a wild direction. But on this kick, the ball literally spins off the holder’s finger. Picture that first time you tried to spin a basketball on your finger, and how miserably you executed it.
Usually the problem on field goals is with an errant snap, but that’s not the case here. It turned into a kick which looked like a terrible shank job from a kicker who has a reliable leg.
