SummerSlam 2017 results: John Cena opens SummerSlam in style

0

It was John Cena’s 14th consecutive SummerSlam match, and his first win since 2010.

Last week, John Cena cost Baron Corbin his Money In The Bank contract when he distracted Corbin just as the bell was ringing for his cash-in on WWE Champion Jinder Mahal. At SummerSlam, Corbin had the chance to even the score at the start of the show, but while he got some good shots in on Cena, victory would not be his on Sunday.

The match started with mind games from Cena, running around the ring and mocking Corbin as he did it. But when Corbin finally got his hands on Cena, he started laying in a physical beating, with strikes and suplexes and throws galore to wear down the 16-time world champion.

Corbin started to get a little too cocky, though, and it looked like Cena was about to get the upper hand with his trademark Five Knuckle Shuffle, but one raised boot from Corbin and a huge chokeslam backbreaker later, and Corbin was on top of the match again. Cena would manage to land the Shuffle a few minutes later, but his try to transition into his Attitude Adjustment was countered by a Deep Six from Corbin, and it was back to work on the beatdown by the young, angry Corbin.

Just when it looked like Corbin had him beat, though, Cena was able to fight back just enough to create some space. Corbin went for the same chokeslam backbreaker again, but Cena knocked him out of his boots with a clothesline, and one Attitude Adjustment later, it was all over.

The win is a notable one for Cena, who hasn’t won at SummerSlam in seven years, since helping put down The Nexus at SummerSlam 2010. Corbin is now left searching for answers, with no Money in the Bank briefcase and no revenge on the man who cost him his glory. What’s next for the Lone Wolf?
