Ping Pong Ball League
I have to bring this up. It's the off season and this is an off season topic. Everyone comments about how the league changes leaning one way or the other, fairness and teams who never get a chance to win while the few always win. Here is the solution.
Ping pong balls. Instead of worrying about all these CBA agreements and rules we simply throw up the teams to the Gods. Each year you ping pong ball match players to teams. One ball is pulled for a team, and then the player is pulled from another set so team and player become random each time a match is created.
What does this solve? Well it actually solves a lot. No more contracts, no more trades, no more free agency, no more bad contracts and players wanting out or asking for a trade, no more CBA agreements, no more tricks to pull to get around the CBA agreement, no more of The Same, each year, but most importantly is the beginning of the year. The anticipation of forming a new team would be top of the ratings chart, fun, fresh, and new.
The most important thing is the money. Players would play on a scale basis instead of superstar scales. The longer you are in the league and selected, the more you make on the backend and in salary. This would incentivize the process instead of allowing ridiculous contracts feed the beast to the point of being dysfunctional. The players would still make their potential money, but in a different way. It would ultimately be more about perception, rather than deception.
Coaches would receive greater notoriety if they consistently win with new teams each year. This would amplify their skill set so much further into the limelight and the history books as well, as perception is deception in how good a coach is with the same superstars each year.
The main objective is to eliminate the dysfunction the current CBA creates as players are getting more and more power to run teams and play games during the offseason. Players should not be creating teams and if you can't allow proper negotiations as in the old days, then it's time to consider random teams to take away the power. We live in an age where power and leverage is everything and the few have it. It's now time in the NBA to consider being subversive in this area and relying on randomness just like in the draft.
This of course will never happen, but placing the idea out there should stir at least a little bit of conversation towards what could be negotiated as better solutions for the dysfunction. Tanking needs to go just like hack a Shaq. Teams getting consecutive first round picks needs to go as well as piling on draft picks. Use them or lose them should be the rule, and of course players and teams should not contrive cap space arrangements to create a future team. This is simply ridiculous and right now it's looking like it's in favor of my own team, but I don't agree with it or even like it. It simply is not the way the sport is supposed to evolve or be played on the backend.
Solutions are generated from ideas. This is one idea. The solution would be an aggregate of this concept, but randomness needs to play a role in how teams are formed to keep the playing field level.
If the NBA isn't prioritizing a level playing field, then I'm not sure what we're doing here. So far they are only considering expansion to other cities and countries.
Nothing new.
Ping Pong your solutions and allow randomness to feed the monster instead.
EDW - Out!
