Duke Recruiting: Tre Jones Announces...
It’s a great day for Duke basketball
As was widely expected, Tre Jones committed to Duke Saturday evening. He’ll follow in the footsteps of his brother Tyus, pictured (we don’t have a picture of Tre yet), who led Duke to the national championship in 2015.
The last brothers to play for Duke were the Plumlee trio - Miles, Mason and Marshall, who all went to the Asheville School.
Tyus and Tre both attended Apple Valley High as did incoming freshman Gary Trent, Jr.
To an extent it’s a risk to follow someone like Tyus at the same school. Jones was only at Duke but was essentially the perfect point guard. He was really a remarkable presence on the court. Expecting Tre to be a clone would be a mistake for fans.
He’s a different sort of player but also quite talented. He’s more athletic than Tyus and dunks, which Tyus didn’t do a lot. He’s also possibly a more intense defender and certainly a better rebounder. However Tyus was a superior three point shooter (although Tre is still developing) and an incredible floor general.
However, at this point in his career, Tre is not as good a point guard as his brother was. That’s no knock - Tyus was extraordinary. He had perhaps the best intellect any Duke point guard has had since Bobby Hurley.
In other words, Duke fans shouldn’t expect Tyus II. But Tre is extraordinary in different ways and is a superb point guard in his own right. We can’t remember where we saw it but one analyst said he’d be the one guy in high school he’d take if he was building a team.
Best of all, he’s still a rising senior and his game is still emerging. It’s entirely possible he could be better than his brother - but if he is, it won’t be in the exact same way.
