Wimbledon results 2017: Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal advance to 3rd round

0

Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal made it easily to the third round after straight-set victories on Wednesday.

The second round of Wimbledon got underway on Wednesday, and top seed Andy Murray made short work of Dustin Brown in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. Brown is always a tough draw early in tournaments, but Murray looked good, a welcome sign after his struggles on grass courts prior to Wimbledon.

Rafael Nadal, the men’s fourth seed and winner of the French Open, also made it through his first-round opponent, Donald Young, in straight sets. Nadal won it, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5.

Roger Federer is the favorite to win despite Murray being the top seed. Federer sat out the clay court season to keep himself fresh, and he’s looked the part. He’ll be especially fresh since he only played one full set in the first round before his opponent retired.

Simona Halep, the second seed for the women, made it past her second-round match against Beatriz Haddad Maia on Wednesday, winning in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. Halep made it to the finals of the French Open, but fell to the unseeded Jelena Ostapenko.

Now she’s trying to get back to contention for her first Grand Slam title.

Marin Cilic, the seventh seed, took down Florian Mayer in straight sets, 7-6(2), 6-4, 7-5. The other top 10-seeded man, Kei Nishikori, made it through Sergiu Stakhovsky, but needed four sets to do it, 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-1, 7-6(6).

On the women’s side, fourth seed Elina Svitolina had a tough second-round match against Francesca Schiavone, but she made it through in dominant form, winning 6-3, 6-0.
