NCAA baseball tournament 2017 scores and bracket: Texas A&M and Davidson set super regional record
The Aggies and Wildcats went 15 innings.
The first day of super regional action of the 2017 NCAA baseball tournament has begun, and the Louisville and College Station supers promise to provide some outstanding baseball drama over the weekend.
The day kicked off with a rowdy affair in Louisville, which saw the opening innings notch three throwing errors between the teams and an ever-elusive Kentucky bat interference that plated the Cardinals’ first run in the bottom of the first. From there, a pitchers’ duel broke out until Louisville’s Drew Ellis cracked a three-run shot over the left field wall in the fifth to put Kentucky away for good.
Ellis admired his blast for just a little too long for some as he made his way to first base, and Kentucky catcher Kole Cottam had words for him as he rounded down to home plate. A short shouting match then ensued — not surprising, given the intense rivalry between the in-state nemeses — but in the end nothing came of it.
The Wildcats managed a short two-out rally in the top of the ninth, but Louisville closer Lincoln Henzman was just too much for Kentucky in the end. Game, Cardinals, 5-2.
In the College Station super, your new favorite team Davidson tiptoed around the Aggies for five innings before blowing up their hosts’ 6-0 advantage in the sixth and seventh. Down one heading into the ninth, they tied it up in the top of the frame and held on in the bottom to send the game to extras. Starting big arm Durin O’Linger lasted 7 2/3 innings in the no decision.
This game in fact set NCAA baseball tournament history, as the Wildcats and Aggies paired up for the longest Game 1 in super regional history. Fifteen full innings were required to decide a winner on Friday, but in the end A&M prevailed on a well placed, bases-loaded single from George Janca. Saturday’s bout will most hopefully deliver similar theatrics.
In the Long Beach super regional, Long Beach State more or less handled Cal State Fullerton in nine innings, 3-0. The Dirtbags jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished, stymying Fullerton’s bats for the duration. The greatest highlight of Friday’s outing, however, was this amazing umpire who offered up the most emphatic “YOU’RE OUT” of the tournament thus far.
