France loses World Cup qualifier after horrendous last-second blunder by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris

0

Sweden jumped France in their World Cup qualifying group because of this gaffe.

Sweden and France met in a World Cup qualifier Friday at Friends Arena in Stockholm, and Les Bleus led the Swedes in points in the UEFA table, 13-10, before the opening whistle.

With just 10 seconds remaining in stoppage time of the second half, and tied 1-1, French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris decided to field the ball far out to the left side of his own 18-yard box, sending what some might call a pass up the middle of the field and directly to the waiting right boot of Sweden midfielder Ola Toivonen. Then Toivonen did this:

From midfield into France’s net as Lloris can only hopelessly give chase. That’s an incredibly horrid gaffe by one of the highest regarded goalkeepers in Europe to give up the points in what should have been a draw.

The mistake was made further egregious because it helped Sweden leapfrog France in the qualifying table, tying the teams at 13 points apiece. Sweden now holds a head-to-head advantage over the Frenchmen, all due to Lloris’ horrendous blunder.
