Chris Paul to San Antonio

0

So one of the hyped stories on ESPN right now is that Chris Paul is considering moving to the Spurs instead of staying with the Clippers this summer. It's not likely to happen, but they go through the exercize of how it could actually happen, and it would definitely involve them giving up one of their bigger contracts - probably either Tony Parker or LaMarcus Aldridge or possibly Danny Green and a couple of the lesser paid young players.

So since this is the time of year for it, let's throw hypotheticals on top of hypotheticals. If this became closer to a real situation, where both CP3 and the Spurs were interested, should the Lakers help them out?

For a couple of examples - if you were in charge of making deals for the Lakers, would you be willing to take on Tony Parker's 15 million (he's injured and probably won't play until January) if you got something else in the deal? Maybe Kyle Andersen or San Antonio's 2018 first rounder?

How bout Aldridge? I'm sure they'd want something of value in return for him -- they wouldn't be giving up anything, and they could probably get a first round pick or two out of other teams for someone as talented as Aldridge. They'd probably want one of the young bigs on cheap contracts. Would you be willing to part with Randle for Aldridge? Nance? Zubac? (and don't make ridiculous Deng/Mozzzy comments - the whole point for San Antonio would be to slash enough cap space to be able to pay CP3 a max deal).

Honestly, I don't think any of it will happen - CP3 will stay with the Clippers and continue to never make a conference finals for the rest of his career. And the Spurs will keep both Parker and Aldridge and some pretty good free agent will sign with them for very little this summer and they still won't catch up to the Warriors. But for the sake of piling hypotheticals on top of hypotheticals...

I'd definitely try to work something out for Aldridge. I wouldn't want to give up TOO much, since he'd likely be a one year rental unless the Lakers became a playoff team next season. I'd actually be willing to give up any one of those 4 for Aldridge, and maybe an option to swap first rounders in 2020 or something like that. Aldridge is a good 2-way PF and a legit All-Star. No, he doesn't make them an instant contender, but with him on the roster, it makes the team more appealing for Paul George to join the Lakers next summer (if that's still a thing by then). If the 2018-19 Lakers included Lonzo, D'Lo, Ingram (all a year more seasoned), Aldridge and Paul George, then that's a legit playoff team with a chance to be an actual contender if 2 of the 3 young players get closer to their ceilings than their floors.

If it was Tony Parker, I'd be more reluctant. He's injured and probably won't play again until January, and any draft picks San Antonio gives up are going to be late in the first round. OTOH, Parker's deal only has 1 year left on it, so you'd keep your 2018 cap space and Kyle Andersen might fit well with the young core roster.

What are your thoughts?
