Kee Hyun Yap: Resilience, duty and passion drive Singapore’s center fielder

For Kee Hyun Yap, representing Singapore on the international stage is not just about performance, it is about commitment, resilience, and balancing two demanding callings.

At the WBSC U-23 Men's Softball World Cup, Yap has emerged as a symbol of determination, continuing to compete at the highest level just days after a frightening hit-by-pitch incident that struck him directly in the face.

But resilience is nothing new for the Singapore center fielder. Away from the diamond, Yap serves in Singapore’s mandatory national service as a canine police officer. The role demands discipline, long and irregular hours, and constant readiness. Qualities that translate directly into his approach to softball.

“Softball is a passion for everybody,” Yap explains. “The values I bring from my job to the field are definitely discipline. I have to juggle my shift work with training schedules… even when I’m tired coming out of a night shift, I still have to show up and train.”

That discipline goes both ways. The teamwork ingrained in softball feeds into his responsibilities in the police force, where coordination and trust are essential. Softball is such a team sport, so I bring that value of teamwork to the police as well,” he says.

Balancing both worlds is no small task, especially as Yap also carries leadership responsibilities. As vice-captain of the national team and a team leader within his police unit, he applies similar principles of communication and accountability in both environments. It’s about man-management, on the field and in the police force,” he notes.

That leadership and mental strength were tested in dramatic fashion earlier in the tournament. It was the bottom of the fifth inning of the game against Denmark. Facing a fast pitch, Yap had no time to react.

“The ball was a bit fast and straight to my face… I didn’t react in time,” he recalls.  The impact left him momentarily disoriented. It felt like someone punched me in the face. I just blacked out,” he says.

Initial fears were serious. There were concerns about a broken nose, and uncertainty lingered as medical staff assessed the injury. For a moment, the possibility of missing the rest of the tournament was very real.

“I was a little bit scared… initially they said my nose might be fractured,” Yap admits.

Fortunately, further examinations brought relief. No fracture, no long-term damage. Thanks to swift medical attention, he was cleared to return.

Yap is quick to express gratitude. The medical staff did a wonderful job… I’m grateful to be able to continue playing,” he says.

For Yap, wearing the Singapore jersey carries deep meaning. His dual role as an athlete and as a member of the police force reinforces his sense of national pride.

“It’s definitely an honour,” he says. “I’m grateful for the police force for allowing me to come for this trip.”

That sense of purpose has been evident throughout his career. In 2023, Yap gained international attention with a spectacular defensive play during the U-18 Men's Softball World Cup that earned a spot in ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10, as well as the WBSC Softball top 10 Plays of the Year, proof of his athleticism and instinct in center field. Yet, he remains grounded.

“I was just putting everything on the line for my country,” he says. "It's been a while. I'm just glad to be here three years again and hopefully I'll continue making more spectacular plays... but right now I want to focus on this tournament."

With his national service set to conclude in five months, Yap is already thinking about the next chapter. Hopefully I’ll be able to get back to training more regularly,” he says. “Maybe one day I’ll be good enough to represent my country in theMen's Softball World Cup.”

For now, his focus remains firmly on the present, helping Singapore compete, contributing as a leader, and proving that even after a frightening setback, he can step back onto the field without hesitation.

In many ways, Kee Hyun Yap embodies the essence of sport: passion, perseverance, and the ability to rise, no matter the challenge.
