WBSC U-12 and U-18 Baseball World Cup winner Colt Emerson agrees to lucrative contract extension with Seattle Mariners
No. 7 Major League Baseball (MLB) prospect Colt Emerson and the Seattle Mariners agreed to an eight-year, US $95 million contract extension. The deal includes a full no-trade clause, a ninth-year club option, and escalators that could exceed more than US$130 million.
"Colt Emerson has long been viewed by the Mariners as a massive piece to their long-term plans, and the club is making an unprecedented commitment to the 20-year-old infielder before he's even reached the Majors," MLB.com wrote.
"I am excited to play for the Mariners for a really long time," Emerson said in a statement. "The people in the organisation, including my teammates, the staff, and the Seattle fans, are a big reason why my family and I love being here and want to stay here," Emerson said in a Seattle Mariners press release.
Born in 2005, Emerson grew up in Cambridge, Ohio.
He was on the USA team that won the WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup 2017, but played only two games.
He attended John Glenn High School. As a junior in 2022, he batted .459 with five home runs, 12 doubles, three triples, and 21 runs batted in (RBIs).
Emerson helped the United States win the 2022 U-18 Baseball World Cup on home soil in Florida. He went 9-for-25, a .360 batting average, starting eight games at third base and one at shortstop.
In his senior season, he hit .446 with eight home runs, 39 runs scored, and 25 RBIs. The Seattle Mariners picked Emerson in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft, with the 22nd overall selection. On July 14, he signed with the Mariners for US$3.8 million.
Emerson made his professional debut in August with the Arizona Complex League Mariners. After 8 games, Emerson advanced to the Single-A Modesto Nuts. He reached base in all but one of his minor league 28 games in 2023 including postseason games.
He started the 2024 season in the 100 top prospect list, but suffered two injuries. He struggled with the Class A Advanced Everett AquaSox, but played well during the Arizona Fall League.
He went back to Everett for the 2025 season and was promoted to the Double-A Arkansas Travelers on August 4. On September 15, Emerson was promoted again, this time to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers. He homered in his debut game.
In 2025, at three minor league levels, Emerson played 130 games and posted a .285 batting average with 16 home runs, six triples, and 14 stolen bases. He primarily played shortstop.
After playing 18 Spring Training games and posting a .268 batting average with two home runs and eight RBIs, Emerson began the 2026 season at Triple-A. He started four games at shortstop for Tacoma, going 6-for-21, a .286 batting average, with a home run.
