Mets Add Pham on Minor League Deal
Just hours before the first pitch of Opening Day, the Mets and 38-year-old outfielder Tommy Pham agreed to a minor-league deal, a source told Jorge Castillo of ESPN. The deal is pending a physical, per Will Sammon of The Athletic.
Pham slashed .245/.330/.370 with 10 homers and 52 RBIs in 449 plate appearances for the Pirates last season. He has played for 10 teams, including 79 games with the Mets in 2023. The Mets dealt him to Arizona for a minor leaguer at the trade deadline that year.
The Mets lost outfield depth when Mike Tauchman went down with a meniscus tear in his left knee during spring training that will require surgery. The Mets’ starting outfield for Opening Day is Juan Soto, Luis Robert Jr., and rookie Carson Benge, set to make his debut. Tyrone Taylor is a backup, Brett Baty could see some time in the outfield and Jared Young can play the corner spots.
Pham’s career slash line is .256/.344/.422. He debuted with the Cardinals in 2014 and hit a career-high 23 homers for St. Louis in 2017.
