Sonny Gray Traded to the Boston Red Sox
The St. Louis Cardinals have traded right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray to the Boston Red Sox, as reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that righty pitcher Richard Fitts and lefty Brandon Clarke will be going to St. Louis in return, and the Cards will send $20 million back to Boston.

Gray is in the final year of his three-year, $75 million contract. As part of the trade, Gray has agreed to rework his contract. He will be making $35 million in 2026 and the Red Sox will have a 2027 mutual option with a $5 million buyout, Passan. That’s basically $40 million to Gray this year so he can be a free agent next offseason. However, the Cardinals will pay half of that.
Gray has a no-trade clause and approved the trade.
Gray is a career 3.58 ERA and 1.20 WHIP pitcher, and in his two years with the Cardinals, he has pitched to a 4.07 ERA and 1.164 WHIP over 347 innings. He holds a 3.26 FIP across that span with a 28.4% K% and a 5.4% BB%.
Gray will slot into a rotation behind their lefty ace, Garrett Crochet. Outside of them and Brayan Bello, the Red Sox rotation is still up in the air. Rookies Payton Tolle and Connerly Early made brief impacts in 2025, and Kutter Crawford will be returning from surgery. There’s still plenty of room for them to add.
There have also been rumors of Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu and others being available via trade.
