Alice Lloyd College Announces Leadership Transition

0 3

As part of Alice Lloyd College’s strategic plan, President Jim Stepp has announced he will transition to the role of chancellor effective August 1, 2026. In his new position, Dr. Stepp will continue to focus on external relations, fundraising, institutional strategy and long-term planning. He will support the college’s mission, guide the Office of Institutional Advancement and work closely with the new president to ensure continuity.

Dr. Stepp has served ALC for over four decades, acting as president since 2022. During his tenure, the College has realized record financial support and capacity enrollment. President Stepp has been involved in the implementation of multiple new projects on the Purpose Road that have contributed to the College’s consistently high national rankings and stellar reputation in the higher education community. He has helped to raise over $100 million for scholarships, building projects, and the endowment fund. Dr. Stepp helped to secure the largest endowment gift in the College’s history, as well as the largest gift from an individual. He has traveled the country extensively, telling the story of Alice Lloyd College, and building friendships with supporters from coast-to-coast.

Dr. Anthony Yonts, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees, praised Dr. Stepp. “President Stepp has dedicated his life and career to the students of Appalachia. The growth and achievements we have seen throughout his years of service stand as a testament to his leadership. We are confident that this strategic plan will help Dr. Stepp continue his prioritization of relationship building with our wonderful friends across the country while also ensuring our campus remains focused on providing a quality, character-based education to the youth of Appalachia.”

Commenting on the transition, Dr. Stepp said, “After considerable prayer and reflection, I believe this is the right time for me to focus on our national support base while working closely with our next president as he assumes responsibility for day-to-day operations. I am honored to continue serving ALC alongside President Emeritus Joe Stepp, in the role of chancellor, and with God’s help, keeping the light unto the mountains burning brightly.”

To help guide the next chapter of Alice Lloyd College, Dr. Charles Marshall has been unanimously selected to assume the responsibilities of president effective August 1, 2026. Dr. Marshall is a former trustee and currently serves as provost and vice-president for academic affairs. As an ALC class of 1999 graduate, he will be the first alumnus to serve as president.

This succession plan allows the College to seamlessly continue its century-old mission to provide a high-quality, character-based education to Appalachian students, regardless of their financial situation. In addition to operating a four-year degree-granting institution, ALC also operates a private K-12 Christian school (The June Buchanan School), and financially supports graduates going on to further their studies through the Gatton Winston Scholars Program. The impact that our institution has on the mountains remains evident, as 83% of Alice Lloyd College graduates return to Appalachia to work and serve.
