FCL Mets Season Recap: Hurtado, Lantigua and Guzman Impress

0 7

Daviel Hurtado threw 19 innings of one-run ball. Edward Lantigua posted an .832 OPS. Randy Guzman hit seven home runs in 49 games.

The 2025 Florida Complex League Mets weren’t a success in the Rookie Ball standings, finishing in third place with a 25-28 record, but a number of prospects showed promise that bodes well for their futures. And, hopefully, the future in Queens.

Edward Lantigua

Hurtado, a 20-year-old lefty from Cuba, struck out 25 and walked five on his way to posting a 0.47 ERA and 0.68 WHIP. He was promoted to Low-A St. Lucie, where he pitched to a 2.70 ERA over 46 2/3 innings. Of the players who spent part of the season playing for the FCL Mets, he was the highest ranked on the latest MMO top 50 prospect list, coming in at No. 27 (Here is a video from 2024 of a Hurtado strikeout).

Lantigua, an 18-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic, slashed .288/.433/.399, showing a great eye (33 walks in 194 plate appearances, 29 strikeouts). He hit three home runs and stole 13 bases, though he was caught stealing 10 times. (Paging Antoan Richardson.) The outfielder was No. 29 in the MMO rankings.

Guzman, 20, of the Dominican Republic, has shown tremendous improvement in his three years in the Mets’ system. In 2023, he hit .175 in 46 games in the Dominican Summer League. Last year, he hit .209 in 21 DSL games. This season for the FCL Mets, he slashed .282/.371/.474 with the team-leading seven homers in 178 plate appearances and earned a promotion to St. Lucie, where he kept hitting.

In 26 games at Low-A, Guzman hit .333/.381/.604 with three homers, 13 doubles and two triples in 105 plate appearances. He was No. 50 in the MMO rankings.

Pitchers Jace Hampson (No. 34), Jose Chirinos (No. 41) and Jose Guevara (No. 43) cracked the MMO rankings as well.

Hampson was an 18th-round pick last year out of Lynnwood (Washington) High School. The 20-year-old right-hander pitched to a 2.37 ERA over 38 innings, striking out 35 and walking seven. He was later promoted to St. Lucie, but only threw four innings there and gave up three runs.

Chirinos struck out 22 in 15 1/3 innings and gave up four earned runs (2.35 ERA) for the FCL Mets before moving up to St. Lucie. The 21-year-old Venezuelan right-hander went 5-2 with a 3.20 ERA and 1.24 WHIP after the promotion, striking out 51 in 56 1/3 innings.

Guevara, 20, of Venezuela pitched to a 5.50 ERA over 34 1/3 innings, striking out 48 and walking 11. He struggled with his control after moving up to St. Lucie, walking 14 in 19 innings and posting a 7.58 ERA.
