Edgardo Alfonzo has been selected to the Mets Latin American Hall of Fame, the team announced Friday.

“It’s such an honor to be inducted into the Mets Latin American Hall of Fame,” Alfonzo said. “Throughout my career, it was always an honor to play for my family, the fans, and my country of Venezuela. This achievement is for everyone who supported me and helped my dreams come true. Thank you so much to Steve and Alex Cohen, the entire Mets organization and the fans for this recognition.”

The Mets Latin American Hall of Fame was created in 2023 and is located in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic, at the site of the Mets’ academy.

“Edgardo was a fan favorite and dynamic player on the field, contributing during pivotal moments throughout Mets history,” Mets owners Steve and Alex Cohen said in a statement.

Alfonzo, 51, was signed by the Mets as an undrafted free agent in 1991 and played eight of his 12 MLB seasons with New York from 1995-2002. He slashed .292/.367/.445 with 120 homers for the Mets, including a career-high 27 in 1999. He won a Silver Slugger that year and finished eighth in NL MVP voting. He was also an All-Star in 2000. From 2003-2006, he played for the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels and Toronto Blue Jays.

Alfonzo was part of the Brooklyn Cyclones’ coaching staff from 2014-2016 and managed the team from 2017-2019, winning the New York-Penn League title in his last season. He was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in 2021.
