Report: Mets Recalling Francisco Alvarez From Triple-A

0 6

The Mets are recalling Francisco Alvarez from Triple-A Syracuse according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

Alvarez has been consistently driving the ball out of the ballpark since his demotion on June 22. The Mets’ catcher hit his 11th home run over his last 16 games on Sunday. The team will call him up nearly a month after he was sent down, ahead of its three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Mets are currenly starving for offense. New York has scored just 25 runs in the last eight games, and is especially looking for some thump in the bottom half of the lineup.

Luis Torrens provided five hits, as well as the game-winning RBI in the salvaging win on Sunday, but has an OPS of .606 overall this season. He has dramatically underperformed his underlying metrics all season long. However, has remained elite defensively.

Hayden Senger, who took Alvarez’s spot on the roster, made only five starts in the past month, totaling just three hits, all of which were singles. Senger will likely be sent back down to Triple-A to accommodate Alvarez.

In addition to better offense, the Mets are hoping to see a reversion from Alvarez defensively. The Mets catcher was underrated behind the plate in 2024, sporting a plus-two fielding run valve (FRV), good for a 67th percentile, according to Baseball Savant. This season, so far, Alvarez has a negative-two FRV, which has him in the 28th percentile. His framing was also a major strength in 2024. But this season he dropped to ninth percentile, down from 88th a year ago.

Notably, given the time spent in the minor leagues over this recent stretch, the Mets have bought another year of control over the young catcher.
