Former Phillie and member of the 2022 National League championship team, Kyle Gibson, announced his retirement on Thursday on the “Serving It Up” podcast. The veteran right-hander pitched for five clubs during his 13-year major league career, most of which was spent with the Minnesota Twins.

Acquired by the Phillies from the Texas Rangers at the 2021 trade deadline — his lone All-Star campaign — Gibson started 42 games for the Phillies between ’21 and ’22, appearing in 43. He pitched to the tune of a 5.06 ERA across 236 2/3 innings in Philadelphia. Gibson pitched 2 1/3 innings in the 2022 postseason, appearing out of the bullpen in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series and Game 3 of the World Series.

While his time with the Phillies was bumpy, Gibson was a solid-enough innings eater for a club that needed it. The Phillies’ rotation back then wasn’t near the level it is today. Gibson also brought a veteran presence.

The right-hander made four starts in the majors for the Orioles this season. He was released in May by Baltimore and signed a minor-league deal with the Rays, never getting a shot with the big-league club. Gibson finishes his career with 328 starts, a 112-111 record, 1,878 innings pitched and a 4.60 ERA.

Gibson will also go down as the last Phillies pitcher to hit a home run. He homered on Sept. 24, 2021 against the Pirates at Citizens Bank Park; 2021 was the final season before MLB adopted the universal DH. Gibson’s long ball against the Pirates was the only one of his career.
