The Not So Great Eight
The Baltimore Orioles losing streak reached eight straight games following Tuesday’s 5-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. With the loss Manager Tony Masolino, the “new voice” that GM Mike Elias said the team needed, is still in search of his first win at the helm.
The Orioles used the same tactic that the Brewers utilized Monday as far as the pitching was concerned. Like Monday when Rob Zastryzny (1.0 IP) “started” and Quinn Priester (5.1 IP) “followed”, Keegan Akin (1.0 IP, BB, 2 K) “started” and then passed the baton to Chayce McDermott (0-1).
McDermott, who allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, walked 5 and struck out 2 over 4.2 innings, fell victim to the homerun. All three runs that he allowed came as a result of the longball, a Brice Turang solo shot in the third inning and a two-run shot by Sal Frelick in the fourth. He exited the contest with the Orioles trailing 3-0 in the sixth.
The Orioles staged a comeback in the seventh when Ryan Mountcastle (2 for 4, R) and Cedric Mullins (1 for 4) opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Heston Kjerstad (0 for 4) grounded into a double play before Ramon Urias (1 for 3, R, RBI, BB) singled and knocked in Mountcastle. Jackson Holliday‘s (1 for 4, 3B, RBI) stand-up triple scored Urias.
Bryan Baker (1.1 IP, K), pitching in relief of McDermott pitched a clean seventh inning before turning the game over to Felix Bautista in the eighth. Bautista gave up a keadoff homerun to Rhys Hoskins and a saw a run score on a throwing error by Holliday on a single by former Oriole Joey Ortiz to finish with a line of 2 runs allowed on 2 hits with a walk and a strikeout in 0.2 inning.
Three strikeouts by the Orioles in the ninth ended the game and tagged McDermott with the loss.
Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman each went 1 for 4.
Dylan Carlson went 1 for 2 as a reolacement for Ramon Laureano (0 for 2) who hurt his left ankle trying to catch a Hoskin’s fly ball in the fourth inning.
There may be a new voice in the clubhouse but is the team hearing it?
