Players of the Week: Baty and Brazobán Show Off
The Mets had an okay week, winning the series against the Pirates and winning one game against the Yankees. Their bats were on the quieter side. They didn’t score more than their average runs scored for the season of 4.6 once last week. They still managed to get two wins against Pittsburgh and another against the Yankees behind some strong pitching performances, bringing their season record to 29-18.

Offensive Player of the Week: Brett Baty
Brett Baty is starting to find some consistency at the big-league level. Between May 10 and May 18, he slashed .278/.278/.778 with a wRC+ of 190. What’s notable about Baty’s performance last week was his home run against the Pirates on May 13. The Mets and Pirates were tied in the seventh inning, then Baty came up to the plate and took a changeup the other way for a 365-foot homer. This dinger was the game-winning run, an extra confidence booster for Baty. During the Yankees game on May 17, Baty also managed to keep the rally going by hitting an infield single, moving Acuña over to second base in the ninth inning. Later, Acuña scored on a sacrifice fly from Lindor to give the Mets the lead and eventual win.

Pitcher of the Week: Huascar Brazobán
Brazobán has been consistently good this season, especially in high-leverage spots. His performances have encouraged skipper Carlos Mendoza to continue to turn to him when the Mets are in a bit of a jam. Brazobán came in three times in relief last week, only allowing two hits, one unearned run, and zero earned in three and two-thirds innings. In his appearance against the Yankees on May 17, Brazobán came in for Griffin Canning in the sixth with two men on first and third and one out in a tie ballgame. He kept the Yankees at bay, inducing two groundball outs and keeping the score tied. Brazobán returned for the seventh, retiring the side in order and ending his night striking out Aaron Judge looking.
The next night, Brazobán got the Mets out of another jam, this one a self-induced bases-loaded one with an Anthony Volpe strikeout.
Brazobán lowered his 2025 ERA to 0.98 and finished the week with a 90.9 groundball percentage rate.
Up Next
The Mets will take on the Red Sox at Fenway, then return home to welcome the Dodgers over the weekend. The Red Sox have been mediocre this season, with a 23-25 record. While the Alex Bregman signing has paid off, there has been a lot of drama surrounding Rafael Devers and the management of the Sox. Looking ahead to the Dodgers, the Mets and the Dodgers are neck and neck for the best records in the National League. It can be a sweet revenge series for the Mets, as the Dodgers were the ones to end their miraculous 2024 postseason run.
