Get ready for some bean balls.

The Seattle Mariners announced Friday that they have recalled RHP Casey Legumina from Triple-A Tacoma. The 27 year old righty has been nails for the Rainiers early in the year, with five punchouts to just a single walk in 4.2 innings, with a 1.93/2.81 ERA/FIP as a high-leverage arm. Legumina also worked in the big leagues a bit with the 2023 and 2024 Cincinnati Reds, totaling a less savory 6.95/6.17 ERA/FIP line with an 18-11 K-BB in 22.0 frames. Our 40 in 40 highlighted the modest expectations and Paul Sewald comparables for the hurler we’ve swiftly come to know as Bean Man.

Kate Preusser’s interviews and reporting at Spring Training tracked the Gonzaga University product’s personal and professional development, from tattoos to Tommy John to a toolkit both physical and metaphorical that is hefty.

Legumina is here functionally in place of Luis F. Castillo, who was optioned on Thursday’s off-day. With another off-day on Monday, the Mariners can afford to go with a four-man rotation for almost a calendar week, meaning a slightly deeper bullpen if they so desire. Even if they choose to maintain the five-man styling, they can select their spot starter much closer to the date, allowing Legumina first crack at stabilizing a heavily worked bullpen.
