Blue Jays to Sign Max Scherzer
The Blue Jays have agreed to a one-year contract worth $15.5 million with three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, pending a physical. The New York Post’s Jon Heyman was the first to report on the deal.
Scherzer held a showcase last week, and the Mets were one of the teams in attendance. Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated reported that the Mets had some interest in a reunion. Scherzer went 20-9 with a 3.02 ERA in 42 starts for the Mets before he was traded to the Texas Rangers at the 2023 deadline for Luisangel Acuña.
Scherzer’s run in Texas, despite a World Series championship in 2023, was mired with injuries, especially in 2024. He had surgery for a herniated disc and then had injuries to his thumb and nerve issues. These injuries forced him to miss the beginning of the season. Shortly after he made his season debut in June, he dealt with arm fatigue and more nerve issues. A hamstring injury ended his season and forced the Rangers to shut him down. Overall, he only pitched in nine games and 43 1/3 innings in 2024 As he gets a fresh start in Toronto, the 40-year-old future Hall of Famer will look to bounce back and help the Blue Jays make the playoffs in 2025.
