Nightengale’s Notes: Boras Still Seeking Big Number for Alonso

0 2

Pete Alonso is still a free agent despite being one of the better home run bats in baseball, and Bob Nightengale shines a little more light on why that might be.

Bob notes that Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras, is using the nine-year, $214 million contract that Prince Fielder received in 2012 as a comparison for Pete. It feels pretty clear as we get closer and closer to pitchers and catchers next month that no team is getting close to nine years for a 30-year-old Alonso.

Bob also mentioned that eight teams are showing some interest in signing Alonso. However, like most other national baseball writers, Nightengale believes the slugging first baseman will ultimately end up with the Mets. “For Alonso, a return to the New York Mets seems to be the likely outcome, but on a deal shorter than Alonso’s desires,” Nightengale said.

More Mets-Related Notes

  • “Several executives believe that if the Mets don’t sign Bregman and move third baseman Mark Vientos to first base, they’ll sign Alonso. And if they don’t sign Alonso, they’ll shift to Bregman.”
  • Bob mentions Tigers, Red Sox and Blue Jays as the other teams showing interest in Bregman.
  • In other third base news, Bob says that Nolan Arenado would waive his no-trade clause for the Red Sox and Mets.

One thing is clear for the Mets: they know they still need at least one corner infielder but will wait out the market with two big-time free agents still available and a capable veteran almost assuredly to be dealt.
