Report: Cubs Potentially Looking to Trade Cody Bellinger
Could there be a former MVP on the trading block? Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that rival executives believe the Cubs want to trade Cody Bellinger, though that may prove a difficult task due to the 29-year-old’s hefty salary.
Bellinger opted into the second year of his three-year contract with Chicago, which guarantees him at least $32.5 million ($27.5 million in salary, $5 million in a potential buyout). He followed up his bounce-back 2023 campaign with a solid showing in 2024, batting .266/.325/.426 (109 wRC+) with 18 homers, 78 RBIs, and 2.2 fWAR in 569 plate appearances. A former Gold Glover, Bellinger’s defense took a step back this season, posting -1 OAA in 794 innings in the outfield.
Rosenthal mentions the Yankees as a potential suitor for Bellinger, whose father played for the team from 1999-2001. New York has shown interest in Bellinger in the past and could be an option in the outfield if they lose out on Juan Soto.
