Rays 8, Red Sox 5: Home runs for everyone!
You get a home run! You get a home run!
The Rays squared off against the Red Sox at home, with Shane Baz on the mound for the Rays, up against Nick Pivettad for the Red Sox.
The first inning went 1-2-3 for the first inning.
In the top of the second, Wilyer Abreu got a two-out walk, then a Triston Casas home run brought two runs in and put the Red Sox on the board early. Jonathan Aranda singled to start the home half, but three outs followed to leave him stranded.
The third inning went 1-2-3 for both sides.
The fourth started three-up, three-down for the Red Sox. In the bottom of the inning, Junior Caminero got a one-out solo home run.
Onto the fifth and Abreu started things out with a single, but a double play quickly eliminated the runner. Then Trevor Story reached second on an error from Christopher Morel, who simply forgot how to catch a ball, it seems. It ended up not mattering as Baz got out of the inning. In the home half, Josh Lowe kicked things off with a solo home run to tie the game.
With two outs and brief mound visit to check on Pivetta, Jose Siri then hit a solo home run of his own, and the Rays were in the lead for the first time all night.
Yandy Diaz then got a double. That was it for Pivetta, making way for Bailey Horn. The hits just kept coming as the Brandon Lowe added to the home runs with a two-run shot. Evidently a Rays’ fan caught two home runs in tonight’s game, the one Red Sox homer, and the BLowe one as well. That guy should go buy a lottery ticket.
Horn was done after giving up a double to Caminero and walking Jonathan Aranda. The Rays didn’t score any additional runs, but it was a very, very good inning.
The top of the sixth was 1-2-3 for the Sox. Logan Driscoll got a two-out single in the bottom half, but no runs scored.
Top of the seventh was another three-up, three-down for the Red Sox. The Rays did the same in the home half.
Baz was done after seven, going 7.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 HR on 96 pitches. Garrett Cleavinger came on in relief, and a pinch-hitting Romy Gonzalez homered right away. The Rays got two outs, but on what should have been the third out, Jarred Duran struck out, but reached first safely on a passed ball. Cleavinger did get the final out, and only the one run scored on the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth it was three back-to-back home runs for Jonathan Aranda, Christopher Morel, and Josh Lowe to load the bases. Jose Caballero almost killed Rafael Devers with a broken bat out. (I kid). With two outs, Siri doubled to clear the bases, and suddenly it was an 8-3 game. Yandy Diaz walked, but the Rays had to settle for the three runs.
Kevin Kelly came on for the top of the ninth to close it out, and got the Red Sox out in order.
Final: Rays 8, Red Sox 3
