Francisco Lindor Continues to Make MVP Case

0 4

The superstar shortstop of the New York Mets continues solidifying himself as a key competitor in the MVP discussion.

Francisco Lindor made his presence known in their 7-2 defeat of the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night at Citi Field. He went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, his 27th stolen base, and three runs batted in. He moved his OPS to .843 on the season, his slugging percentage to .500, and his on-base percentage to .343. With the home run, Lindor tied Alex Rodriguez as the only other shortstop to have five seasons of 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases.

In his press conference on Tuesday, president of baseball operations David Stearns said Lindor is what an MVP should look like.

“It’s been an unbelievable season to watch. We’re getting to the point, I think, where we’re talking about perhaps the greatest individual position player season in the history of this franchise. I’ve been around some really special seasons, been around some MVP seasons. This is right up there with anything I’ve seen on a day-to-day basis.”

Stearns also noted that Lindor’s upper-tier leadership “allows him to contribute so much” to the Mets organization.

Even with the baseball unicorn in Los Angeles having an insane season, there is an excellent argument for Lindor to win the vaunted award.

He is in the 90th percentile or higher in Baseball Savant’s batting and field run value, landing in the 93rd and 97th percentiles, respectively. He has 16 outs above average on defense, placing him in the 99th percentile. He is in the upper tier of fWAR in the major leagues and is half a win higher than Ohtani.

Lindor is, for lack of a better term, setting the standard on and off the field for the Mets this season. He is the main reason they are winning games and have a shot at making a playoff push. If the Mets find their way into the dance, there is no reason that the engine behind New York’s season should not be the MVP.
