Matthew Boyd nearly perfect for Columbus, Chase DeLauter blasts three-run bomb in Akron win

0 1

Cleveland Guardians minor league recap for Thursday, Aug. 8, 2024

Columbus Clippers 2, St. Paul Saints 4

Box Score · Clippers fall to 55-53

This was a brutal loss for the Clippers because they outhit St. Paul 10-5 and even outwalked St. Paul 5-2, yet somehow they lost 4-2 because St. Paul had all its hits and walks pretty much in the same inning, scoring four runs in the eighth.

On the bright side, on a day where Cleveland showed it desperately needed starting pitching help at the MLB level, Matthew Boyd rose to the occasion. Boyd was flat out dominant, retiring the first 17 batters he faced (then picking the jerk who got a single against him off).

His final line was a brilliant six shutout innings with one hit allowed, no walks and seven strikeouts in just 63 pitches. His next start better be with the Guardians.

The worst part of the loss? It was Sam Hentges who blew it. He was pitching for the second game in a row and he couldn’t get anyone out. He faced three batters and all three reached base, then all three came around to score.

Offensively, Columbus should have scored about 6 or 7 runs, but failed because they went a Guardians-esque 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

Kyle Manzardo led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with a double and a walk (please call him up for the Minnesota series. He’d literally have to take an Uber from St. Paul to Target Field).

Raynel Delgado went 2-for-3 with a stolen base, Will Brennan went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, a hit by pitch and a stolen base, Estevan Florial went 1-for-4 with a walk, Gabriel Arias tripled and Johnathan Rodriguez went 1-for-4 with a walk.

Akron RubberDucks 8, Reading Fightin Phils 6

Box Score · RubberDucks improve to 61-43

This was the opposite of the Clippers game as Akron beat Reading despite being outhit 15 to freaking 6. That was all because of the longball.

Chase DeLauter made some noise, going 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a sacrifice fly, knocking in four runs on his own.

Aaron Bracho had the lone multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a stolen base. Petey Halpin went 1-for-3 with a walk while Dayan Frias and Milan Tolentino both tripled.

Starting pitcher Austin Peterson danced around six hits to allow one run in five innings pitched. He struck out two and walked one.

Magnus Ellerts finally gave up his first runs since being promoted, allowing a pair on two hits with three strikeouts in two innings.

Davis Sharpe got rocked for three runs on six hits in 1 13 innings, but Bradley Hanner locked down the final two outs to earn his third save.

Lake County 9, Dayton Dragons 6 (F/11)
Lake County 2, Dayton Dragons 4 (F/7)

Game 1 Box Score · Game 2 Box Score · Captains move to 62-41

Game one looked like it was going to be a low-scoring affair until the Captains went off for five runs in the top of the 11th inning to run away with a victory.

Travis Bazzana was held hitless in six plate appearances, but he reached base safely three times, walking twice and getting hit by a pitch. He also scored a pair of runs.

Cooper Ingle had himself a game, going 2-for-5 with his ninth home run of the season, a three-run bomb, and a walk.

Alex Mooney also impressed, going 2-for-4 with two walks and two stolen bases (his whopping 36th stolen bases of the season).

Jonah Advincula reached base safely three times, going 1-for-3 with a triple and two walks. He also had an outfield assist.

Starting pitcher Carter Spivey was excellent through four shutout innings before the game was suspended. Zach Jackobs allowed a pair of runs in three innings of long relief. Shawn Rapp earned the win by allowing three runs (one earned) while pitching both the 10th and 11th innings and allowing both ghost runners to score.

In game two, starting pitcher Dylan Delucia allowed three runs on five hits in 4 23 innings. He struck out four and walked zero. Jay Driver allowed an inherited runner to score and gave up a run himself in 1 13 innings.

Offensively, Angel Genao had a great game, going 3-for-4 with a double.

Tyresse Turner also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double. The only other Captain to reach base safely twice was Jake Fox, who went 1-for-2 with a walk.

Lynchburg’s game was postponed due to weather.
