Six Pack of Stats: White Sox 4, Tigers 1

Carlos Rodón leads the Chicago 9 to the series sweep in Detroit

Carlos Rodón went 6 13 innings of no-hit baseball, flirting with his second no-hitter of the season. Alas, after a missed call on strike three in Eric Hasse’s at-bat in the seventh, he drove a double to left field a few extra pitches later, hence breaking up the no-hitter.

Although the no-hitter came and went, the victory was always there; the Chicago White Sox finished the sweep of the Detroit Tigers this afternoon!

The Starters

Carlos Rodón, even without the no-hitter, was brilliant this afternoon and seriously needs to be considered a Cy Young candidate; the dude is dominant. In seven innings of baseball, Los gave up one hit, with that runner later scoring on a sac fly. Rodón gave up two walks to his nine strikeouts.

Los’s 102 pitches break down like so:

Baseball Savant

In a bullpen day for the Tigers, Kyle Funkhouser went out on the bump for his first career start of a very early, reliever-focused career. He did really well this afternoon. In 2 23 scoreless innings, Funkhouser gave up one hit and one walk, and also struck out one batter. Unfortunately for him, the pitchers who came after him could not keep the Sox scoreless.

Funkhouser’s 33 pitches went down like this:

Pressure Play

With the bases loaded in the second and a 2-0 Sox lead, Danny Mendick was hit right on his elbow pad to drive in a run rather easily for a 2.12 LI play.

Pressure Cooker

Buck Farmer, in one inning of work in the sixth inning, surrendered two hits, walked one, and gave up two runs. He did strike out two batters, but the damage was done. In a low-scoring game, he gave up the Sox’s insurance runs and cooked under 1.28 pLI pressure.

Top Play

Leury Legend’s double in the fifth drove in Mendick for a 2-0 lead, and was a .126 WPA play.

Top Performer

He’s been brilliant all season, today being no exception. Carlos Rodón’s .334 WPA blew everyone out of the water, as Los made sure to bring all the brooms during this sweep!

Smackdown

Hardest hit: José Abreu absolutely crushed a baseball for a double in the seventh inning that left his bat at 111.3 mph.

Weakest contact: Adam Eaton’s single off of Buck Farmer in the sixth left his bat at a very slow 62.6 mph.

Luckiest hit: Leury García, having himself a series and in the leadoff spot today, notched a .110 xBA single in the eighth.

Toughest out: Zack Collins lined out in the eighth on 104.0 mph, .650 xBA contact.

Longest hit: Pito’s double in the seventh traveled 405 feet.

Magic Number: 5.0

In all 11 of his starts this season, Carlos has pitched at least five full innings every time. Talk about reliability.
