The Phillies officially placed both Moore, Alvarado, and Ronald Torreyes on the 10-Day IL on Monday. The team hasn’t officially released a reason for the players being placed on the IL, but MLB.com‘s Todd Zolecki reports that they are going through COVID-19 protocols. Two of the team’s coaches have also reportedly entered COVID protocols. The team has recalled Damon Jones, Nick Maton, and Christopher Sanchez to take their spots on the active roster.

Moore spent 2020 in Japan with the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks, and he pitched well enough to earn a contract with the Phillies in 2021. However, he’s struggled to start the year, pitching to a disastrous 9.82 ERA through his first 11 innings. He is next scheduled to start on Friday, and the team is preparing Vince Velasquez to fill his spot if he’s not cleared to return by then.

Alvarado has quietly been one of the best relievers in baseball over the past few seasons, and he will join reliever Archie Bradley on the IL. That leaves the Phillies bullpen — which was the fourth-worst in the league last season per Baseball Reference‘s Wins Above Replacement — without two of their top options.

The Phillies are currently listed as slight -104 underdogs on FanDuel Sportsbook for Monday’s game vs. the Giants.
