Jaguars Ink WR Marvin Jones to Two-Year Deal; $9.2 Million Guaranteed

0 25

With the NFL free agent signing period well underway, one group that’s been somewhat neglected has been the wide receivers. This year, the NFL salary cap fell 8% to $182.5 million. That means that teams have to be even more judicious with how they choose to allocate their money. Usually, it’s been the running back position devalued by teams, but surprisingly the wide receiver market has taken longer to thaw than expected.

That changed today when according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Jacksonville Jaguars signed former Lions player Marvin Jones to a two-year $14.5 million deal. The deal includes $9.2 million in guaranteed money for Jones, who will join a Jaguars team with a new coach in Urban Meyer and likely a new quarterback in Trevor Lawrence.

Jones is entering his ninth year in the league and has been a productive player throughout his career. In six of his eight seasons, he’s racked up at least 700 receiving yards and has caught nine touchdowns in three of his last four seasons.

It’ll be interesting to see how the rest of Jacksonville’s wide receiving corp looks when things are finalized. Despite his solid play, Jones will likely slot lower on Jacksonville’s depth chart. His 115 targets last season amounted to 9.5 fantasy points per game.
