[Competitive Cheer] Johnson Tabbed as New Falcon Competitive Cheer and Dance Head Coach
WICHITA, Kan. – Friends University Director of Athletics Dr. Rob Ramseyer has announced the hiring of Joshua Johnson as the university's new Competitive Cheer and Dance head coach.
The dance program will be launched soon and the competitive cheer team portion made historic strides this season, winning the KWU Invitational and climbing as high as 10th in the NAIA rankings.
"I am excited to welcome Josh as our new coach," Ramseyer said. "He impressed us in the interview process with his vision for the program and commitment to our mission. We look forward to him building upon the great work of Coach Jill Fenske."
Johnson takes over the position with a stark familiarity with the program, as he currently serves as the Falcons' tumbling coach while functioning in a similar role at his alma mater, Wichita State University.
His experience also includes a current role as head coach of the Fierce All-Stars in Wichita, a level three competitive cheerleading team. With the All-Stars, Johnson is also the tumbling coach while conducting private lessons in stunting and tumbling.
"Leading up to this very humbling opportunity, I did have a chance to spend time and get to know the team I am about to embark on a new journey with," Johnson said. "What I came to learn is that this program is already built upon a strong foundation of dedication to each other and the team as a whole."
"With that said, I am thankful and eager to get started molding and refining all of the great skills that each athlete possesses in order to reach our maximum potential."
At WSU, Johnson was the Co-ed Cheer Team Captain and a TEAM USA candidate for a team that placed third at the National Meet in Orlando, Fla.
Johnson graduated from WSU in December of 2019 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.
