Football Opens Season With Doane College
The 2013 football season for Friends University will kick off Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. when the Falcons host the Doane College Tigers.
Doane is coached by Matt Franzen who enters his seventh year at the helm.
The Tigers were selected third in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) for the 2013 season.
In 2012 Doane College compiled a 7-3 record and a No. 20 NAIA National Ranking. The Tigers are anchored in their offensive line by Dillon Carmichael (#70), a 6'6", 325 lb. senior who earned NAIA All-American honors as a junior. A total of 14 starters return, seven on offense and three of which are offensive lineman. In 2012 the offensive line allowed the fewest sacks in the NAIA (4) while the defensive unit, led by a core of linebackers was part of a unit which finished ninth in the NAIA in fewest first downs allowed.
The Falcons are led by Monty Lewis who enters his 11th season as head coach. Friends University was selected third in the KCAC preseason polls.
In 2012 Friends University finished 6-5 overall and 5-4 in the KCAC. The program is looking to recapture the KCAC title after winning the crown in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
Defensively the Falcons will be led by premier linebacker Marcus Carter (#52) a 6'2", 245 lb. senior from Las Vegas, NV. Offensively the Falcons will rely on Nehemiah Scott, a 5'10", 200 lb. junior from Wichita along with offensive lineman Cortlin Couture, a 6'5", 250 lb. senior from Highland Ranch, CO.
Carter, Scott, and Couture were selected to the 2013 KCAC preseason football team.
The game promises to be exciting as the two programs meet for the first time during the Monty Lewis era.
