Indonesia reward Olympic gold medal badminton stars with five cows, meatball restaurant, new house and £250k cash
INDONESIA’S gold medal winning badminton heroes have been offered cows, meatball restaurants, houses and £250,000 in cash by way of reward.
Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu won the women’s doubles on Monday and they will live like royalty when they return home after an influx of crazy prizes have been offered up.
Indonesia is badminton-mad and the two women cemented their hero status by beating China’s Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan 21-19 21-15 in Monday’s final.
They gave Indonesia its first gold of the Tokyo Games.
And residents in the Asian country have come out in their droves to show their appreciation.
The country’s Government have stumped up the £250k reward amid a reported Covid-linked drop in people playing the sport.
Apriyani hails from the Sulawesi island and the district chief from her hometown has promised five cows await her upon her return.
And a chain of meatball restaurants has pledged to give each woman their own outlet.
A property developer has chipped in with an apartment each in the country’s capital Jakarta.
