Local Medalists in Northumberland U17 Bronze

Northumberland’s BE Under 17 Bronze tournament was run parallel to the Under 13 event in late November and again saw medals of all colours won by our county juniors.  The honours went to Lucy and James Dodd, Charlotte Graham, Amy Ward, Ollie Edmondson, Jack Tilbury and Matthew Short who were all placed in the medal positions.

The girls’ singles was played in a single group of six players and was won convincingly by Lucy.  Amy and Charlotte both had two wins but the bronze medal with three wins was taken by our friend from Durham, Anna Kroon.  The boys’ singles had a good entry of 24, of whom Northumberland had an excellent 11 entrants, and was played off in six groups.  Ollie Edmondson, Sonny Ho and Matthew Short all got close to winning their groups.  However, top-seeded James Dodd was the only one of our boys to progress to the knock-out stages, beating Ben Whitaker 21-16 in the semi.  The final against Lancashire’s James Weeks was a really good competitive match but it was the visitor who took the gold medal 21-18.

In the level doubles, the girls’ event had only three pairs and they all beat each other.  Charlotte and Amy emerged as the winners on points’ difference.  In the boys’ doubles, Ollie and Jack won their group convincingly to move into a final against top-seeds Sam Selcher-Maxwell (Isle of Man) and James Weeks.  Another very close match again went to the visitors with the same 21-18 score.  The final event saw two Northumberland pairs reach the final where Lucy and James faced Charlotte and Ollie.

This one went to the Dodds family pairing 21-11, with two more local pairs, Amy & Sonny and Anna & Matthew taking the bronze medals.
