FIA boosts F1 Super Licence points for Indycar

Dec.11 (GMM) The FIA has confirmed an increase in Formula 1 Super Licence points for IndyCar – a long-awaited adjustment that comes as Colton Herta needs an F2 campaign this year to qualify for a 2027 Cadillac seat.

The decision was signed off at the FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in Tashkent.

In its statement, the governing body said: “The number of points allocated to the IndyCar Series has been increased for positions from 3rd – 9th to reflect the growing significance of the category.”

The revised structure gives far stronger rewards for top-five championship finishes. Third now earns 25 points (up from 20), fourth jumps from 10 to 20, and fifth rises from 8 to 15. Sixth remains at 10, while ninth moves from 2 to 3 points.

IndyCar’s champion still earns the full 40 – but unlike F2, only first or second guarantees automatic Super Licence eligibility.

The change narrows the long-criticised gap between F2 and IndyCar, acknowledging the depth and competitiveness of the US series while maintaining F2 as the FIA’s top-tier benchmark.
