Northern Thunder Stock and Mini Stock Nationals headline night

September 8, 2025, OHSWEKEN, ON  – Northern Nationals week at Ohsweken Speedway shifts to the Big O for Thursday night’s action. The Northern Thunder Stock Nationals and the inaugural Northern Mini Stock Nationals headline a card also featuring open practice for both Sprint Car divisions competing this weekend.

“I would put these races up against any division at any race track when it comes to entertainment,” said speedway General Manager Clinton Geoffrey. “Our teams deliver excitement, and this week there will certainly be outsiders trying to come in and steal the big prize money.”

The Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks and the Insta Insulation Mini Stocks entertain thousands of fans each week supporting Ohsweken’s two sprint car classes. Paying $5,000 and $2,000 respectively to win – each event will put its winner prominently in the record books.

Ohsweken’s Thunder Stocks are dominated by two drivers with iconic nicknames. Reigning and defending track champion ‘The Big Dog’ Ryan Beagle hopes to cap off a championship season with a victory, but ‘Brewster Baker’ Dave Bailey has won more features than Beagle despite not earning the championship.

This dynamic duo has hogged Slack Lumber Victory Lane for more than a full year. The last time someone not named Beagle or Bailey won a Thunder Stock feature event at Ohsweken was June of 2024. While maintaining that streak will suit these two fine there are dozens of competitors ready to knock them off the top of the mountain.

The Mini Stocks deliver an entirely different storyline. Fifteen feature events in 2025 produced 13 different winners in the ultra-competitive class. One driver conspicuously missing from the winners list is 2025 track champion Tim DeBoer.

“The Mini Stock class is as unpredictable as it is thrilling,” said Geoffrey. “When the 30-car starting grid takes to the speedway there’s 30 drivers with a legitimate shot at being the first Northern Mini Stock Nationals champion.”

Seventy different drivers competed at least once in the Insta Insulation Mini Stock class this season. Running a traditional Nationals format gives all of them a chance to control their own destiny.

Drivers are lined up for qualifying heats with the fastest drivers at the front based on timed practice results. There’s a slight twist because the top four starting spots in each heat race is inverted providing a driver with the opportunity to earn passing points.

Success in each session ensures a driver a spot in the pole dash – a qualifying race designed to set the line up for the first four rows of the feature event. The pole dash includes the eight drivers with the most passing points from their heats

The finish of the pole dash becomes the starting line-up for the respective Nationals A Main event. All Nationals A Mains are 35 laps in distance giving everyone ample time to race their way to the front.
