MALTA – Don’t be surprised, if the next time Matt DeLorenzo walks into a tavern for a cold beverage, he tells the bartender, “Make mine a double.”
DeLorenzo pulled off a rare double at Albany-Saratoga Speedway Friday night, first winning the fourth leg of the DiCarlo Auto Body 358 Shootout Series, and then coming back to win the 35-lap modified feature at the historic Malta track.
DeLorenzo’s win in the 35-lap modified feature was also his second consecutive victory, allowing him to pocket the Madsen Overhead Doors Back-to-Back Bonus of $500 for the second time this season.
In both races, DeLorenzo benefitted from a good starting position. He started on the pole in the 25-lap DiCarlo 358 Shootout and although he was scheduled to start fifth in the modified feature, he moved up to third when Tommy D’Angelo, who was scheduled to start on the pole, opted to start at the rear of the field.
The sweep gave DeLorenzo a total of five wins this season, matching his career high, set in 2022, the year he won the modified championship at Albany-Saratoga.
DeLorenzo led flag-to-flag in the 25-lap DiCarlo Shootout Series feature, but had to contend with Mike Mahaney and slower cars late in the race. DeLorenzo and Mahaney were part of a two-car breakaway midway through the feature, which ran all green after the only yellow flew on lap two, and when DeLorenzo began to catch the back of the field on lap 13, Mahaney was able to close to within two car lengths.
On lap 17, Mahaney tried to get under DeLorenzo in traffic, but when Mahaney found the inside blocked by Dale Gray’s car, DeLorenzo was able to get away.
DeLorenzo had another scare on lap 19, when Mike Coffey made contact with Brendan Gibbons in the fourth turn, sending Gibbons’ car right into DeLorenzo’s path, But DeLorenzo escaped that potential disaster and when he finally cleared the cars of Coffey and James Fadden on lap 21, that was all she wrote.
Mahaney had to settle for second, while Felix Roy finished third, after starting eighth.
“The small blocks are tough as heck here. They’re so fast,” said DeLorenzo after the win. “When I saw Mike (Mahaney), I thought, Oh, crap. The track kept moving up, but I found something in the middle.”
DeLorenzo got a gift in the 35-lap modified feature, Jack Lehner, still looking for his first win of the season, inherited the pole when D’Angelo started at the rear, and Lehner set a torrid pace early. But disaster struck on lap 14. Coming out of the second turn, Lehner caught the slower car driven by Kris Vernold and when Lehner dropped to the inside, Vernold made the same move and made hard contact with Lehner’s car, damaging the front end and ending Lehner’s night.
That have the lead to DeLorenzo, but a rash of cautions kept him on edge, because he had Marc Johnson right beside him.
DeLorenzo had taken the No. 2 spot away from Johnson on lap six, and now, Johnson wanted to take away the lead. But DeLorenzo stuck to the bottom, and Johnson just couldn’t get enough momentum built up on top to make a pass for the lead.
Johnson had to settle for second, with Adam Pierson third, Peter Britten fourth and Jessey Mueller fifth. All five of those drivers started in the top eight positions.
“I don’t know if I had anything for Jack,” DeLorenzo admitted after the modified feature. “I was just trying to keep the car straight and keep the tires under me.”
“I thought there was a good middle, and I kept rolling up on him,” said Johnson. “But the cautions killed me.”
Tim Hartman Jr. picked up his second win of the season in the 25-lap sportsman feature, which paid $1,060 to win through sponsorship from Crane’s Outdoor Power Equipment. The race got off to a slow start, with two major pileups before one lap was even completed. But once the race started, Hartman Jr. went right to the top and quickly moved forward.
Hartman Jr. was up to seventh when Chris Jakubiak brought a yellow on lap five, and he then got under both early leader Alex Palmer-Sawyer and Chris Crane Jr. at the same time between turns three and four after the restart to move up to third.
Hartman Jr. worked his way around Cody Ochs for second and then took the lead for good on lap 15, going under Scott Towslee coming out of the fourth turn on lap 15.
Connor Crane used a late restart to finish second, with Towslee third, Chris Crane Jr. fourth and Ochs fifth.
Kyle Hoard outran Brandon Emigh and Jason Casey to record his first win of the season in the 25-lap pro stock feature, Hoard started third and really never had any breathing room, facing constant pressure from Emigh and Casey. Hoard also earned $1,060 for his win, again through sponsorship from Crane’s Outdoor Power Equipment.
Jimmy Duncan won the Four States Enterprises Pro Stock Dash for Cash, earning a $200 bonus.
Rookie Jarron Maguire chalked up his first career win in the wild 20-lap limited sportsman feature. Dan Seguin took the lead on lap five of the feature, but on a restart on lap nine, spun his car in front of the pack going into the fourth turn.
Maguire was able to avoid Seguin’s spinning car and inherited the lead but the next time around, Alex Smith, who was looking for his second win of 2025, went around Maguire on the outside of turn three to take over the top spot.
Just when it looked like Smith was going to get the win, Bodie Marks brought out a caution of the last lap, setting up a one-lap shootout. Maguire pulled even with Smith going down the back stretch, kept his foot to the floor in the fourth turn and beat Smith to the finish line by inches, officially a margin of 0.004 seconds.
Nick Arnold, who started 14th, got up for third.
PJ Cram Jr. drove to his fifth win of the season in the 20-lap street stock feature, and earned a $250 bonus from Online Performance and Stone’s Automotive. Cram started 11th, and took the lead away from Matt Mosher going down the backstretch on lap 13.
“I love racing with that guy,” said Cram of Mosher. “He got me last week, but I got him back this week.”
The four-cylinders took part in the Randy Senecal Memorial, a tribute to the former four-cylinder racer, with the Senecal family putting up $350 to the winners of both the dual cam and single cam divisions. Adam Montville returned to victory lane in the dual-cam division, easily holding off Josh Ramsey and David Frame, while Chris Duffney Jr. finished fifth overall and had the first single-cam car across the finish line.
