MALTA – Matt DeLorenzo had a great night at Albany-Saratoga Speedway Friday night, but it was just inches away from being a spectacular one.

DeLorenzo came out on top of a spirited, elbows out, no-holds-barred duel with Marc Johnson to win the 35-lap modified feature at the historic Malta track, and then came within 0.445 seconds of doubling up, finishing second to Felix Roy in the companion feature, the second leg of the DiCarlo Auto Body 358 Shootout Tour.

DeLorenzo was again behind the wheel of teammate Brian Gleason’s 3G ride for the modified feature, which paid $3,000 to win. DeLorenzo first ran Gleason’s car two weeks ago, which resulted in DeLorenzo’s first win of the season.

When asked after the race if his team had made any changes in the week off, the result of a rainout, DeLorenzo joked, “I washed it. And we had a different right rear tire.”

In addition to the winner’s payout of $3,000, DeLorenzo also walked off with the $500 Madsen Overhead Doors Back-to-Back Bonus.

The modified feature kept the fans on their feet, even though the DeLorenzo-Johnson battle was the closing act.

First, it was a battle between front-row starters Matt Depew and Branden Darrah. Depew, who had suffered through a rash of engine problems during the first month of the season, went right to the front, with Darrah running the top. Darrah snatched the lead coming out of the fourth turn on lap seven, but the next time, Depew had his nose back in front.

Derek Bornt, who was hugging the bottom, then made his presence felt, taking the No. 2 spot away from Darrah coming out of the fourth turn on lap nine.

Darrah’s night ended on lap 10, when he suddenly pulled into the pits, and by that time, DeLorenzo, who had started 10th, was up to fourth, behind Depew, Bornt and Adam Pierson.

DeLorenzo worked his way by Pierson on lap 16, and two laps later, was inches behind Depew.

On lap 19, Bornt squeezed inside Depew going down the backstretch to take the lead, and DeLorenzo worked the top side for second, but before the lap was completed, a caution came out for Roy, who had a flat tire, which put Depew back in front, Bornt second and DeLorenzo third.

Following the restart, Depew led lap 20, but DeLorenzo had gone back to the top and was again in position to take the lead, only to have another caution thwart his attempt.

But on the restart, DeLorenzo crossed over in front of Depew to take the lead.

Pierson got around Depew for second on lap 23 and suddenly, all eyes were on Johnson, who had started 13th and was battling Pierson for second.

Another restart on lap 29 gave Johnson the shot he needed. Johnson rocketed off that restart to grab the lead coming out of the fourth turn to complete lap 29, but when Johnson and DeLorenzo then went into the second turn, the two cars made contact, with Johnson forced to back out of the throttle to avoid going off the racing surface. DeLorenzo had the lead to complete lap 30 and that’s where he stayed, despite another restart on lap 34.

“On these slick tracks, there’s not a lot of grip and you have to use everything you can,” said DeLorenzo. “I just wanted to take his lane away. It’s racing. I’m sure he wasn’t happy.”

Asked if he thought about getting his payback on the restart with two to go, Johnson answered, “Believe me, I tried. I just couldn’t get in there.”

Pierson crossed the finish line third, with Jack Lehner fourth and defending track champion Peter Britten fifth. Lehner started 18th, and Britten started 17th.

Darrah nosed out DeLorenzo to win the Four States Enterprises Dash for Cash, which was worth $200.

Roy picked up his second straight DiCarlo Shootout Tour win, holding off a last-ditch charge from DeLorenzo. Roy had started on the outside pole in the 25-lap feature and took the lead away from David Schilling on lap six. DeLorenzo, who started eighth in his own No. 3D Bicknell modified, worked his way up to second by lap nine. DeLorenzo got the caution he needed on lap 17 and was cranking his small block for all it was worth over the final eight laps, but Roy hit the finish line with that 0.445-second margin of victory.

Schilling finished third, followed by Ronnie Johnson and Neil Stratton.

Joey Scarborough came from his 14th starting spot to chalk up his second win of the season in the 25-lap sportsman feature, which paid $1,060 to win through sponsorship from Emerick Associates. Zach Buff, who had started 15th, used a restart on lap 13 to take the lead away from Scott Towslee, but another yellow with five laps to go bunched the field, giving Scarborough the opportunity to take the lead for good. Chris Jakubiak, who started 13th, finished third and Derrick McGrew Jr. charged from a 25th starting spot to finish fourth.

Nick Arnold won the 20-lap limited sportsman feature, earning a $500 payday through sponsorship from Burch Motors. Sloan Cherko, who started on the outside, seemed to have control of the race until she got into heavy traffic. When she got behind the car of George Palmer, Arnold was able to make up a lot of ground and got the lead with just two laps to go. Cherko hung on for second, with Colten Emigh third.

Defending track champion Beau Ballard outran Chuck Dumblewski and Brandon Emigh to win the 25-lap pro stock feature, and Damian Ward outdueled Andrew Fitzgerald to win the 20-lap street stock feature.
