The reigning Southern 500 champion from Mitchell, Indiana, clocked in a pole-winning lap at 182.745 mph in 49.249 seconds, which was enough to become the 46th competitor overall to win the pole for the Great American Race in his first qualifying trials with Joe Gibbs Racing and deliver the first Daytona 500 pole for Toyota.
